Getting Around Blog

If you’re relocating to Guernsey to work for us, one of the first things you may want to know is how you’ll get around our beautiful island!

Fortunately, there are plenty of options to choose from, whether you prefer the convenience of a car, the ease of public transport, the flexibility of a bike, or the simplicity of walking. This blog will provide you with some useful travel tips to help you get around the island:

Travelling by car

Driving in Guernsey may require a bit of an adjustment if you’re used to driving in other locations. With narrow lanes, high hedges and granite walls, the roads in Guernsey can feel quite different. The maximum speed limit on the island is 35mph and you’ll encounter a unique filter-in-turn system at junctions. At these, all directions have equal priority and cars must take turns to enter the junction as indicated by yellow thatched markings on the road, and signposts. Road markings are also quite different, with yellow rather than white lines and a large yellow arrow indicating an upcoming junction.

Whilst navigating, Google Maps can be helpful, and having an actual map to hand in your car is advisable as you travel around the island. If you bring a car with you to Guernsey, you will need to re-register it within 14 days of arrival, including paying a registration fee and ‘first registration duty’. You’ll also need to exchange your current license for a Guernsey driving license within a year of arriving.

Parking

All public parking is free in Guernsey – we know, pretty special! However, most on-street parking and car parks in shopping areas are marked, and you must use a ‘parking clock’ (available from DVL, the Guernsey Information Centre and the police station) to indicate your time of arrival - day or night. The time limit for that particular parking space starts from the time you parked there. Disabled parking spaces are also available and can be used when displaying a valid blue badge permit, which are also available from DVL.

Travelling by bus

The bus service operates daily and can take you almost anywhere on the island for just £1.25 per journey, with a discounted rate of only 75p per ride if you purchase a Puffin Pass for regular use. You can find out more about detailed routes and timetables here.

Travelling by taxi

If you prefer to travel by taxi, Guernsey has a regulated, licensed taxi service with ranks located in St Peter port, St Sampson, and Guernsey airport, with accessible taxis available. Booking taxis in advance, especially during peak times is advisable. You can find a list of available taxi companies here.

By foot or bike

Alternatively, Guernsey is also ideal for getting around by foot or bike. There are designated lanes called Ruettes Tranquilles, promoting a recommended speed limit of 15 mph, with priority given to people walking, cycling or riding horses.

With this variety of transport options and parking facilities, getting around Guernsey is hassle-free, whether you choose to use the bus, taxi to walk or to cycle. We hope that once you find a social worker role with us, you’ll enjoy exploring around our stunning island with ease.
