If you’re considering applying for a job with us and will be renting once you arrive, you may be eligible for rent allowance.

To find out if you are, we’ve written a blog that includes information about the allowance, eligibility, and how to work out the calculations. (Please do bear in mind that income tax and social insurance contributions will be deducted from rent allowance and additional rent allowance payments, so the actual amount you receive might be lower than you expect).

The States of Guernsey offers rent allowance for a maximum of four years, whether you’re looking for a temporary or permanent place to live. If you choose to purchase a property within the Bailiwick of Guernsey during this period, your rent allowance will come to an end, and you will be eligible to access the House Purchase Grant.

How rent allowance is calculated

Rent allowance is based on the rent you’re paying, minus the minimum qualifying rental charge of £185 per week, up to a maximum of £260 per week (any amount over this maximum must be covered by you as the employee). To calculate your weekly rent, you’ll need to multiply your monthly rent by 12 to get the annual rent, and then divide it by 52. From this weekly rent amount, you subtract the minimum qualifying rent amount of £185 and the remaining balance is used to determine your rent allowance.

Example 1: If your monthly rent is £1,000, your annual rent would be £12,000 (£1,000 x 12), or £230.77 per week. After subtracting the minimum qualifying rent amount of £185, the balance of £45.77 per week would be payable in rent allowance.

Example 2: If your monthly rent if £2,300, your annual rent would be £27,600 (£2,300 x12) or £530.67 per week. After subtracting the minimum qualifying rent amount of £185, the remaining balance of £345.77 per week would be split, with the States of Guernsey paying £260 per week and you needing to cover the difference of £85.77 per week.

It’s important to note that the States of Guernsey doesn’t provide upfront assistance for rent allowance, such as deposits or advance payments, so you’ll need to plan accordingly. It’s always best to check on the States of Guernsey government website for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding rent allowance eligibility and calculations.
